If you take a drive on the 76-mile, often narrow, La Ruta Lenca, you will weave through the inhospitable mountains of southwestern Honduras. From across the border a cold Salvadorian wind blows into a cloud forest where spider monkeys, puma, and jaguars lurk within the dark interior. On the small plantations here the rich and fertile soil cause coffee cherries to ripen uniformly.
